Wilson Creek

A logging-camp landing that became a residential district at the east end of Sechelt, on low ground that a creek used to run through.

Two names for one place

BC Geographical Names records Wilson Creek as a community on the east side of the Strait of Georgia, at Mission Point. Its post office name was adopted on 12 December 1939, it was entered as a settlement and post office on 28 July 1945, and it was classed as a community on 15 January 1982. On 26 March 2021 the official name became ts'uḵw'um, as recommended by the shíshálh Nation and supported by the District of Sechelt and the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

The same record describes ts'uḵw'um as an important shíshálh village site that shares its name with the creek. When the change came before Sechelt council, the Selma Park-Davis Bay-Wilson Creek Community Association had already passed a motion calling it a positive step toward reconciliation. Both names are in use, and this page uses the one most people still search for.

The Encyclopedia of British Columbia describes Wilson Creek as a residential district that grew up around Tsawcome, a reserve of the Sechelt Nation. It was first homesteaded in the 1880s and became a steamship landing and a logging settlement. BC Geographical Names says the original Wilson appears to have been James Wilson, a blacksmith at the Burns and Jackson logging camp here in the 1890s.

The eastern end of Sechelt

Wilson Creek is inside the District of Sechelt. The District's five village-era neighbourhoods are listed east to west as ts'uḵw'um (Wilson Creek), Davis Bay, Selma Park, the original Village of Sechelt, and West Sechelt. Coming from Roberts Creek on Highway 101, this is the first of them.

The Sechelt Fire Department runs one hall, at 5525 Trail Avenue downtown, for the whole District. Wilson Creek and Tuwanek, at the two far ends of the District, are both answered from it.

Where Chapman Creek used to meet the sea

The Sunshine Coast Conservation Association records that the mouth of Chapman Creek was once at Wilson Creek, and that in 1936 the estuary was diverted to the outlet it uses today at Davis Bay. The low ground behind the highway between Wilson Creek and Davis Bay is the creek's old floodplain. The community association has written to Sechelt council about poor drainage and severe ponding on Highway 101 in Davis Bay, between Pier 17 and Bay Road.

Ditches dug into an old floodplain fill slowly and drain slowly. At an empty house, a blocked culvert or downspout shows up as water standing across the lot. Nobody notices it until someone walks the property.

Water nobody is watching

Davis Bay, Selma Park and Wilson Creek were all in the third phase of Sechelt's water-meter rollout. The new meters were catching leaks as they went in: in one September, six houses were found to be leaking about as much water every day as 500 homes use. In an occupied house somebody notices the wet floor. In an empty one the leak runs until somebody checks.

What it costs

A scheduled check is $55 a visit, plus $10 travel. The travel charge is the same everywhere between Gibsons and Egmont. There is no minimum term and no joining fee. See the full price list.
