The last settlement on the road up Sechelt Inlet, built from boat-access summer cabins, on septic, with nothing beyond it but water-access shoreline.

The road stops here

Tuwanek is the last community on Sechelt Inlet Road. BC Geographical Names records it as a Locality, status adopted, decision date 3 October 1978, on map sheet NTS 92G/12, and describes it as an unincorporated rural population centre. Tuwanek Point is a separate adopted name from 2 March 1950, tagged as Indigenous in origin. North of the settlement the shoreline of Sechelt Inlet is reachable only by boat, and the marine campsites of Sechelt Inlets Marine Provincial Park begin.

Documented streets are Amber Road, at numbers including 7498 and 7499, and Naylor Road at 5735, along with Sechelt Inlet Road itself out to about 7648. Postal codes V7Z 0C6 and V7Z 0C7 are in use. The Tuwanek Hotel is the one commercial landmark. Tuwanek was added to the municipality when it was incorporated in 1986.

The buildings are here because boats came first

The Sechelt Official Community Plan treats Tuwanek with Tillicum Bay and Sandy Hook. Its description is the key to the housing: small residential places that were, for the most part, reachable only by boat when they began. Across the three there are about 640 permanent residents and roughly 200 seasonal ones. Sewage disposal is on-site and water is piped by the regional district.

Those cabins were built to be reached from the water, and the road arrived afterwards. That is why lots are small, why buildings sit close to the beach, and why a high share of them are still used seasonally. A boat-access cabin converted over decades into a year-round house tends to have plumbing added in stages, crawlspaces that were never meant for winter, and a shoreline structure that takes weather directly.

The furthest address from the only fire hall

The Sechelt Fire Department runs a single station at 5525 Trail Avenue, downtown, for the whole District and the Sechelt Indian Government District, about 12,000 people across 4,830 hectares. Tuwanek is the furthest point in that area from the hall, at the end of a shoreline road with no second route. The chief has said the department holds specific response plans for Tuwanek and Sandy Hook, and the reasons he gave were the driving time, the terrain, the vegetation and the single road.

The department's equipment for a fire away from a hydrant is one 1,600-gallon water tender and one Type 6 wildland engine. Hydrant coverage in Tuwanek is not published. The only fire-flow deficiencies the District has named are the West Sechelt reservoir and the Sechelt Inlet Road industrial watermain, neither of them at this end.

Everything that closes the road closes the only route

On 4 February 2025 the road closed above the Porpoise Bay campsite, both directions, at 9:30 a.m. and remained closed for several hours, during the snowfall that measured 42 cm at East Porpoise Bay. Buses stopped for the rest of the day and schools shut. Anything north of that closure point, which includes every address in Tuwanek, was cut off from the hospital, the fire hall and the RCMP detachment for the duration.

During the windstorm of 4 and 5 November 2024, BC Hydro named customers north of Sechelt among those who would be without power overnight, citing extensive damage and access challenges. Coast-wide the peak was more than 12,000 customers on the Monday; by midday Tuesday over 4,000 were still without supply, and 700 remained out mid-afternoon on the Wednesday. The regional district's message during that event was that people here might have to manage without help for a long stretch.

What the record does and does not show

Tuwanek is counted in the same RCMP patrol zone as Sandy Hook. The zone's totals were 79 for 2023, 64 for 2024 and 88 for 2025, the last of them a rise of 38 per cent. No incident specific to Tuwanek appears in Coast Reporter or in Sunshine Coast RCMP releases between 2021 and 2026. That is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up: the zone figure is the only published measure that applies here, and it is shared with the neighbourhood next door.

Most household insurance asks for an empty dwelling to be looked at over winter. The Insurance Bureau of Canada says most policies name the interval at which a competent person must check the house so that the heat is kept on. Where the policy allows it, the water off and the system drained takes the place of the visits. Intervals differ between companies; your own contract names yours, and every four days running is one figure it may give.
