The residential street closest to the point

Whitaker Road climbs the Davis Bay slope within the District of Sechelt, above and behind Highway 101. The house at 4657 Whitaker Road stands at 49.441958 north and 123.726112 west. Documented civic addresses run 4604, 4632, 4657, 4673, 4682, 4740 and 4793, and three postal codes appear along them: the old rural V0N 3A2 together with V7Z 0E4 and V7Z 0E6. The 4600 block matches the 4603 Sunshine Coast Highway address of Mission Point House, which puts this street nearer to the point and the creek mouth than any other residential street in Davis Bay. Like every street here it is a local road in the District's third and last snow clearing tier.

The oldest documented houses in Davis Bay

4657 Whitaker Road was built in 1958. It is a single storey of 1,155 square feet with two bedrooms, one bathroom and a carport, on a lot of 10,019 square feet. It sold for $624,000 on 23 October 2020, came back on the market and sold again on 10 July 2026. A 1,155 square foot two-bedroom bungalow of that age on a quarter acre is a post-war summer cottage that has been lived in ever since, and no other street in this group has a documented house from the 1950s. The stock is not uniform: 4673 Whitaker Road is a manufactured home, and newer infill sits between the older buildings. Across the District of Sechelt as a whole, 315 dwellings date from 1960 or earlier and another 1,125 were built between 1961 and 1980, which is 28 per cent of the housing stock built before 1981.

The regional district drilled 195 metres at Whitaker Park

Whitaker Park is a District park in Davis Bay reached by a right-of-way off Simpkins Road. In November 2024 the Sunshine Coast Regional District drilled a test well in it, logged as TW-4(24), well tag 69708, one of five test wells put down across the Coast in 2024 and 2025 for the Water Supply Plan Feasibility Study reported in June 2025. The hole went through sand and gravel over fractured rock to 195 metres. The estimated yield was 2.2 litres a second from the overburden water bearing unit and 0.95 litres a second from bedrock, and no pumping test was carried out. The comparison in the same study is stark: the test well at the Sechelt hospital site, TW-5(25), reached only 82.8 metres into Aquifer No. 566 and returned a certified yield of 22.2 litres a second, and the study went on to concentrate on that site. About 70 per cent of the water supply still comes from the Chapman system, which is what serves this street.

Two parks and three churches inside 500 metres

Measured from the corner at 4720 Sunshine Coast Highway, where Pier 17 Market stood before it closed, Crossroads Community Church is 230 metres east, Whitaker Park 260 metres south-east, St. John's United Church 360 metres south-east, Living Faith Lutheran Church 460 metres south-east and Brookman Park 500 metres south-east. Roberts Creek is 7 kilometres east. The practical effect is that an empty house on this street backs onto or faces ground that people cross on foot all year, including two public parks and three congregations with their own parking and their own weekday traffic.

The response is fast, but somebody has to call it in

From the Davis Bay wharf, Sechelt Hospital is 3.8 kilometres and about five minutes away, the fire hall 4.6 kilometres and seven minutes, and the RCMP detachment at 5760 Teredo Street 5.1 kilometres and eight minutes. Fire cover is a single station at 5525 Trail Avenue, with the office on 604-885-7017 and a 24-hour duty officer on 604-740-2595. It is a composite department: seven full-time staff, six career firefighters working two shifts of three since January 2025, eleven volunteer officers and six groups of paid-on-call firefighters on a round-the-clock rotation, with two pumpers, a 100-foot platform, a 1,600-gallon water tender and a Type 6 wildland engine. None of that shortens the time between a pipe splitting behind a locked door in February and the first person noticing.

What a check on Whitaker Road covers

  • Crawlspace access, floor framing and the ground under a 1950s bungalow after heavy rain
  • Original windows, door frames and hardware, with every lock tried rather than looked at
  • Chimney, flue, furnace and hot water tank, and the floor around each
  • Heat confirmed running and steady, or everything drained with the main closed
  • On a manufactured home: skirting, tie-downs, the underfloor water line and its heat tape
  • The carport, the shed and anything stored under cover but not behind a lock
  • Whether the property is on District sewer or a septic field, with the tank lid and field checked to match
  • Gutters, downspouts, the driveway culvert and the ditch that takes the hillside runoff
  • Fence lines and gates on the park and pathway side of the lot
  • A dated photographic record of every one of these, filed on the day of the visit

Insurers commonly attach a condition to an empty dwelling once the heating season starts: attendance by somebody competent on a fixed cycle, in many policies at gaps of four days at most, or the water shut off and the pipes emptied. Older houses sometimes attract additional conditions. Read what your own policy requires rather than relying on the usual figure.

What it costs

A scheduled check at Whitaker Road is $55 a visit, plus $10 travel. The travel charge is the same everywhere between Gibsons and Egmont. There is no minimum term and no joining fee. See the full price list.
