The Insurance Bureau of Canada says most home policies set out how often a competent person must check an unoccupied house to make sure the heat is being maintained. The period is written into your own policy, and it can be as short as three or four days. MyCottageWatch keeps a documented record of regular checks of your property for exactly this reason.

The winter of 2008–2009 on the Sunshine Coast was a winter to remember, or to forget, depending on whose cottage it was. Heavy snow and unusual cold produced frozen pipes and collapsing roofs.
