5.85 kilometres, and no second route

Egmont Road leaves the Sunshine Coast Highway and runs east-north-east to Egmont village. Routed on 12 September 2026 from Bathgate Road in the village out to the highway, it measures 5.85 kilometres. The junction with Highway 101 sits 1.17 kilometres south of the Earls Cove ferry terminal, so the road meets the highway inside the stretch that fills with waiting ferry traffic in summer; Coast Reporter reported in August 2026 that the line had reached more than a kilometre back from the terminal.

The regional district states the position without qualification: "Egmont Road is the only road that provides vehicular access in and out of Egmont from Highway 101." Its evacuation plan also calls the road a critical evacuation route for both Egmont and North Lake, and treats N Lake Road, the single-lane gravel road to North Lake and the Klein Lake campground, as an extension of it.

Addressing changes along its length. The property at 6460 Egmont Road carries the Madeira Park postal code V0N 2H4, at the highway end, while 5592 Egmont Road is Egmont V0N 1N0.

The fire hall is at the highway end, not in the village

The provincial address geocoder puts the Egmont and District Volunteer Fire Department hall, 5592 Egmont Road, at 49.748848 north and 123.994566 west. That is about one kilometre in from Highway 101 and about 4.7 kilometres west of Bathgate Marina in the village. The driving figures confirm it: the hall is 53.5 kilometres and 50 minutes from the Sechelt RCMP detachment, while the marina is 58.7 kilometres and 57 minutes from the same place.

For anyone with a house on this road, that 4.7 kilometres changes the numbers. A property near the highway end is a few hundred metres from the hall. A property at the village end is at the far end of the only road, and so are the marina, the community hall at 6801 Bathgate Road, and the Skookumchuck Narrows trailhead. The regional district uses Bathgate Marina as the Egmont muster point, listing a store, community centre, marina access, a gas pump and parking between the buildings.

Waugh Lake supplies about 25 residents and several businesses

The regional district's Egmont water system draws from Waugh Lake, 50 metres above sea level, 30 hectares in area, holding 4.98 million cubic metres. It serves approximately 25 residents and several businesses through a 270,000 litre reservoir, with filtration, ultraviolet disinfection and chlorination. The Egmont Cove Properties Owners Association ran the system for nearly fifty years; the regional district took it over in 2012 after continuing water quality problems and a recommendation from Vancouver Coastal Health. The system's own backgrounder says it operates at designed capacity during peak summer months, and in December 2025 the regional district approved $68,846 of design work toward a treatment upgrade.

Every other house on this road is on a well or a surface intake, with an on-site septic system. The backgrounder says nothing about hydrants or fire flow.

How long help takes at the far end

On 10 May 2025 the Egmont department was called to an injured hiker at Skookumchuck Narrows. The call came at 6:45 p.m., crews reached the hiker at 7:30 p.m., and they met BC Ambulance by 10:30 p.m. That is three and three quarter hours from the call to the ambulance, at the end of this road, in daylight, in May.

Fires here are fought with the members who can get to the hall. At 1:50 in the morning on 23 August 2020, a house on Maple Road burned; twelve Egmont firefighters attended with five from Pender Harbour. The four regional district volunteer departments moved to a paid-on-call model in August 2025, and Egmont's tax impact was the highest of the four at $13.39 per $100,000 of assessed value, with a first-year cost of $42,343.

DriveBC has long kept a highway camera in this area. Before the Trout Lake station went in, the Sunshine Coast's only cameras were at Stewart, Brooks and Egmont Roads. Camera 244 is published as Earls Cove.

What a check on Egmont Road covers

  • Whether the driveway is at the highway end or the village end, and which conditions apply to each
  • The driveway culvert and ditch line after rain, and windfall over the road frontage
  • Doors, windows, garage and shed, with each lock physically tried
  • Heat running and holding, or the house drained and the shut-off closed and labelled
  • The regional district water connection and its shut-off for properties on the Waugh Lake system, and the well and pressure tank for everyone else
  • Septic tank lid and field, and any standing water above them
  • Propane tank level, regulator and fittings; the woodstove, chimney and ash
  • Trees leaning on the roof, the deck or the power drop, which is the same line that feeds the rest of the road
  • A photographed, dated record of each item, filed on the day of the visit

Household cover on a house standing empty usually depends on inspection at defined intervals over the heating months by someone competent, often with four days as the outer bound, unless the supply has been closed and the system emptied. The figure that binds you is printed in your own policy, so look it up before setting a routine.

What it costs

A scheduled check at Egmont Road is $55 a visit, plus $10 travel. The travel charge is the same everywhere between Gibsons and Egmont. There is no minimum term and no joining fee. See the full price list.
