The gazetteer calls it an island
BC Geographical Names records Francis Peninsula with the feature type Island, not Peninsula. The entry was reinstated on 4 April 1972, on map sheet 92F/9. It had been renamed Beaver Island on 28 July 1945 by British Admiralty charts, and the earlier name was restored twenty-seven years later to match local usage. The land area is 3.8 square kilometres, or 1.5 square miles.
The reason the gazetteer treats it as an island is tidal. At high and neap tide the ground is separated from the mainland by Bargain Narrows and Bargain Bay, and at low tide it reconnects. A two-lane road with a short bridge carries every vehicle that reaches a house here. Bylaw 708 names Francis Peninsula as one of the plan area's distinct neighbourhood areas and records that Bargain Harbour contains private shishalh Nation land holdings.
The surrounding water names were all settled on 2 December 1948. Bargain Bay and Bargain Narrows are official. Bargain Harbour, at the same coordinates as Bargain Bay, was rescinded, which is why two names for the same water still appear on signs and listings.
One bridge, and 4.66 kilometres to the shops
Francis Peninsula Road is the spine. Warnock Road, Murdoch Road, Rondeview Place, Wesjac Road, Dubois Road, Shark Lane and Stone Road run off it. Routing on 12 September 2026 gave 4.66 kilometres and 7 minutes to the Madeira Park centre and about 37 kilometres and 40 minutes to Sechelt Hospital. Francis Point Provincial Park and the Francis Point Ecological Reserve occupy the seaward end. The park is 83 hectares, 74 of them upland and 9 foreshore, was established on 17 May 2004 through private land acquisition, and allows no campfires at any time.
The main that failed at Murdoch Road on 4 March 2025
The South Pender Harbour water main broke at the junction of Francis Peninsula Road and Murdoch Road that morning. About 300 residences lost water. Service came back at 11:20 a.m.
The emergency replacement covered 350 metres of asbestos-cement pipe. Its cost roughly doubled, to $160,283. A further 230 metres of the same pipe was left in the ground. The system draws on McNeill Lake with Harris Lake as backup and serves about 2,300 residents in the Madeira Park and Francis Peninsula areas through roughly 917 connections.
Volumetric billing began on both Pender Harbour systems in 2026, at $850 base for up to 46 cubic metres a quarter and $4 a cubic metre above that. The regional district sent 600 leak letters in July 2026 and states plainly that it cannot operate on private properties. A running toilet or a split supply line inside a closed house is now a charge as well as a repair.
The health centre closes at 3:45 and has no emergency department
The Pender Harbour Health Centre is at 5066 Francis Peninsula Road. It opens Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and provides family doctors, nursing and a loan cupboard. It marked fifty years in August 2026 with three family doctors on staff. There is no emergency department on this side of Sechelt.
A truck fire on the connector road held the department in its own yard
On 6 February 2026 a pickup caught fire on Francis Peninsula Road and blocked access to the fire hall. Hall 1 stands at 4990 Gonzales Road, off the same corridor, and houses BC Ambulance Station 265 in the same building. A vehicle burning on the connector can stop both from leaving.
The corridor has a record of other interruptions. A bank failure of roughly 100 tonnes beside the road on 27 December 2022 shut Highway 101 both ways for three and a half hours. On 20 December 2024 a shooting was reported at Rondeview Place and Francis Peninsula Road. An uninsured vehicle was stolen from the 4900 block on 31 March 2022, and community mailboxes on Francis Peninsula Road and Warnock Road were broken into in October 2021. In April 2025 a Stone Road resident heard noises near his unlocked tool storage trailer, went out with a shotgun, and was convicted in March 2026.

Home policies typically state that an unoccupied dwelling must be looked at on a fixed schedule during the heating season by a competent person, in many cases not more than four consecutive days apart, unless the supply has been shut off and the pipes emptied. That clause is not identical across insurers. Check the one you are covered by.
