A steep bench above the inlet

Sandy Hook occupies a steep bench on the west shore of Sechelt Inlet, north of Porpoise Bay. The only way in or out by road is Sechelt Inlet Road. It came into the District of Sechelt at incorporation in 1986 with West and East Porpoise Bay, Tillicum Bay and Tuwanek.

The spine is Sandy Hook Road, with Deerhorn Drive, Skookumchuk Road, Porpoise Drive and Naylor Road off it. Postal codes V0N 3A7, V7Z 0E1 and V7Z 0P3 are all in use here. The Sechelt Official Community Plan groups Sandy Hook with Tillicum Bay and Tuwanek and describes them as small residential communities, most of which originally were water-access only. Between the three there are roughly 640 permanent residents and 200 seasonal ones. Sewage is on-site everywhere; water is piped by the regional district. The plan records the area as vulnerable for emergency services, and gives the single road access as the reason.

Lots are small, steep, and sold with a geotechnical report

A vacant lot on Sandy Hook Road shows the pattern. Lot 39, postal code V0N 3A7, is 9,112 square feet, which is 0.21 acre, measuring 50 feet by 173 feet and zoned R1. It was listed at $260,000 with 2024 taxes of $1,726, and it was offered with a detailed geotechnical site analysis, an arborist survey and an approved septic plan already done. The listing describes a neighbourhood beach, a playground, a boat launch and access to Tetrahedron Provincial Park, and puts the town at nine minutes away.

A geotechnical report and an approved septic design are ordinary parts of a land sale here. That is what steep ground and no sewer mean in practice, and it is also what an owner is maintaining when the house is empty: a drain field on a slope, and a driveway cut into it.

The neighbourhood organised itself around fire

The Sandy Hook Community Association states that "Sandy Hook has been recognized as a FireSmart Community for 2024, and we are working towards the same status for 2025." It runs chip-up days for yard debris, neighbourhood clean-ups and home-protection sessions, and membership costs $10 a year.

FireSmart work has to be repeated. Needles come out of gutters, brush is cut back from walls, firewood is moved off the siding. At a house used six weekends a year, nobody does any of it unless somebody is sent.

The regional district's Community Wildfire Protection Plan lists Sechelt Inlet among the lower Coast's high wildfire risk communities. On 23 September 2025 a 0.8-hectare wildfire near Sandy Hook, suspected to have been caused by humans, was held.

The Sechelt Fire Department answers from one hall at 5525 Trail Avenue, downtown. Chief Dwight Davison said on 27 September 2025 that his department keeps specific response plans for this neighbourhood and for Tuwanek, because of how long the drive takes, how steep and how heavily vegetated the ground is, and because there is one road in and out. The same report cited a 2023 needs assessment:

there could be situations where the department couldn't mount a response

2023 needs assessment, reported by Coast Reporter, 27 September 2025

The only patrol zone in Sechelt that rose sharply in 2025

The RCMP count Sandy Hook and Tuwanek together. That zone recorded 79 occurrences in 2023, 64 in 2024 and 88 in 2025. The 2025 figure is 38 per cent above the year before, and it is the sharpest rise of the four zones the District publishes. In absolute terms the numbers are small, because the number of houses is small.

Power here is named separately in storm reports. On 5 November 2024 BC Hydro said that because of extensive damage and access problems, houses north of Sechelt, in Sandy Hook and in the Sakinaw Woods area, would have no power until the morning. Sandy Hook was one of four places on the whole Coast named that way. The regional district's own statement during the same event was that during an emergency residents could be on their own for an extended period.

The road above the neighbourhood is not a second exit. Gray Creek Forest Service Road, the access to Tetrahedron Park, climbs from 900 to 1,800 metres. BC Parks recommends four-wheel drive with quality winter tires and chains in snow, and says ploughing there is occasionally provided by a local volunteer.

What a check in Sandy Hook covers

  • The septic tank lid and the drain field on the slope, including wet or sunken ground above it
  • The driveway cut and the bank above it after heavy rain, and the culvert at the road
  • FireSmart items around the building: gutters, brush at the walls, wood piles, and the deck underside
  • Doors, windows, crawlspace hatch and shed, tried by hand on every side of the building
  • Heat holding through a cold snap, or the supply closed and the lines emptied
  • Whether power came back after an outage, and what the freezer holds
  • Boats, trailers, kayaks, outboards and yard equipment, photographed where they stand
  • A first visit as soon as Sechelt Inlet Road reopens after snow or wind
  • A dated photographic record of every item, sent on the day

Home policies commonly cap the gap between visits to an empty dwelling in the heating months at four consecutive days, and require whoever attends to be competent, unless the supply has been closed and the system emptied. What governs is the clause in your policy, so read it.

What it costs

A scheduled check at Sandy Hook is $55 a visit, plus $10 travel. The travel charge is the same everywhere between Gibsons and Egmont. There is no minimum term and no joining fee. See the full price list.
