Many insurance policies specify, in the fine print, that the policy is invalid if the property is left unattended for a specified period of time. That period is often very short — three or four days is common during heating season, and most policies treat a dwelling as vacant after thirty days. The winter of 2008–2009 on the Sunshine Coast was a winter to remember, or to forget, depending on whose cottage it was. Heavy snow and unusual cold produced frozen pipes and collapsing roofs, and absentee owners spent it on long-distance phone calls trying to find a plumber, a carpenter or a roofer who could get there that week. It had to be done well and it had to be done fast.
